The problem
Gardening is loud work done outside. A petrol mower or a hedge trimmer makes a call impossible even if you could reach the phone, and most of the time you can't. The productive part of your day and the reachable part don't overlap.
Three things follow from that:
- Spring decides your year. A weekly or fortnightly cut booked in April is income until November. Miss that call in March and you haven't lost a job, you've lost a season.
- One-off work has a fixed date. Clearing a garden before a house sale or an event leaves no room to wait for a call back.
- You can't tell what you missed. Three missed calls from numbers you don't recognise, and no way to know which was the landscaping enquiry.
Voicemail doesn't solve it, because most callers don't leave one. You come back to the van at lunch to a list of numbers and no information.
The calls you miss
Running a petrol mower on a large residential plot. The noise makes hearing your phone impossible, let alone holding a conversation. A caller looking to set up a regular weekly cut tries once, doesn't leave a message, and books with the next gardener they find.
Hedge trimming on a step ladder. Both hands on the trimmer, ears full of engine noise, phone in the back pocket. A new customer wanting a garden clearance before a house sale calls, gets no answer, and moves on. It's a time-sensitive job and they can't wait.
Deep in a planting project, gloves on. You've got a trowel in hand and you're halfway through a border that needs finishing before the end of the day. Your phone rings. You can't answer without stopping everything. A landscaping enquiry – the kind that carries a decent margin – goes unanswered.
Tuesday lunchtime on a long day. You eat in the van, check messages, and see three missed calls from different numbers. None left a voicemail. There's no way to know what each one wanted without calling all three back. Two of them won't pick up.
Trade businesses lose an estimated £1,200–£4,800/month to unanswered calls. For gardeners, spring is when new regular clients are won. Unanswered calls at peak time have an outsized impact. That estimate is based on typical UK trade job values and a 20–30% call conversion rate. Work out your own number.
How Telphi answers for a gardener
When a call comes in, Telphi answers immediately in your business name and gathers the information you need before you've picked up your phone.
Caller: "Hi, I'm hoping to get a quote for a full garden clearance – it's a bit of a state and we're putting the house on the market."
Telphi: "I can definitely help with that. Is this a one-off clearance or are you also looking for ongoing maintenance after that?"
Caller: "Just the one-off clearance for now – we've got a buyer in mind and need it done in the next two to three weeks."
Telphi: "Got it – I'll make sure we flag that timeline. Can you give me a rough idea of the garden size, and are there any large trees or significant structures involved?"
Caller: "It's maybe 80 foot rear garden, a few overgrown shrubs, a broken greenhouse we need taken down and removed."
Telphi: "That's helpful. Can I take the postcode to confirm we cover your area?"
Caller: "It's OX4 2BD – Oxford."
Telphi: "Perfect. I'll text you a booking link so you can choose a time for a site visit. We'll come and have a look and get a quote over to you."
You get a summary: job type, one-off or ongoing, garden size, key obstacles, urgency, location. The caller books the site visit directly into your calendar. You arrive knowing what you're quoting.
