The problem
A handyman runs on volume. Several small jobs a day, booked and turned around fast. That model only works if the diary keeps filling, and the diary only fills through the phone.
Three things follow from that:
- Every unanswered call is a gap next week. The diary thins out a fortnight after the calls stop being answered, not the same day.
- You're moving between properties all day. A good share of calls come while you're driving, with the next customer already waiting.
- The enquiries are vague by nature. Someone rings with a list of odd jobs. Until you've spoken to them you don't know if it's two hours or two days, or whether half of it needs an electrician.
The callers move fast too. Small jobs are easy decisions, and local Facebook groups are full of alternatives. A homeowner who gets no answer posts there instead and has three names inside the hour.
The calls you miss
Up a loft ladder fitting a hatch. A caller wants shelving in four rooms. Half a day's work. Your phone rings below you. You can't get down safely. By the time you're back on the ground they've already found someone on a local Facebook group.
Tiling a bathroom, grouting in hand. You can hear every ring from the windowsill. Stopping means ruined grout or a tile out of alignment. So you leave it. Most people won't ring back. They'll try the next number.
Driving between jobs, back-to-back. You're hands-free, three jobs in the day, and a customer wants to run through the next one before you arrive. Your phone rings with a new enquiry. You can't take two calls at once.
Sunday evening. A landlord has seen a property that needs minor repairs before a new tenant arrives Thursday. They ring at 7pm. No one answers. They ring the letting agent's recommended contractor instead.
How Telphi answers for a handyman
A handyman's jobs vary enormously. Telphi's qualifying questions scope the work quickly and filter out the calls that aren't worth your time.
Caller: "Hi, I've got a few odd jobs I need doing around the house."
Telphi: "Of course. Can you give me a rough idea of what's on the list?"
Caller: "Mainly hanging some shelves, fixing a door that won't close properly, and one of the bedroom sockets needs looking at."
Telphi: "Useful, thank you. The electrical socket – do you know if it's just loose, or is it not working at all?"
Caller: "It's completely dead."
Telphi: "Thanks. Is this in a rented property or your own home?"
Caller: "My own home."
Telphi: "And whereabouts are you based?"
Caller: "Northampton, NN4."
Telphi: "Perfect. I'll pass this over and someone will be back to you to confirm availability and get it booked in. Can I take your name and best number?"
You get a summary: shelving, sticking door, dead socket, own home, Northampton NN4. You know before you ring back whether it fits your skills and diary, and whether the electrical work is within scope or needs referring on.
For landlord and letting-agent calls, Telphi asks about property type, whether the work needs completing before a tenancy date, and whether there are multiple properties involved. Those details shape your pricing and scheduling.
What you get after every call
After each conversation, Telphi sends you:
- A written summary of the jobs described, location, property type, and any timeline the caller mentioned
- A full transcript of the conversation
- A call recording to revisit before you ring back
- An urgency flag if the caller has a hard deadline – tenancy changeover, landlord inspection, or a problem affecting habitability
Cold callers and sales pitches are filtered out before anything reaches you. Only genuine enquiries land in your inbox.
If a caller has a property emergency – a burst pipe causing damage while they're waiting for a plumber and need temporary help, for instance – Telphi can transfer the call to your mobile before they hang up.
Booking
After qualifying the enquiry, Telphi texts the caller a booking link. They pick a date and time straight from your live calendar. You arrive at the job knowing what's needed. No double-booking, no chasing.
