The problem
Locksmithing is the most time-sensitive trade there is. Someone locked out at 11pm isn't comparing reviews or getting three quotes. They're standing on a doorstep working down the first page of Google, and the first locksmith who answers gets the job.
Three things follow from that:
- Second place earns nothing. There's no shortlist and no callback. One job, one winner, decided in four rings.
- The reason you can't answer is that you're working. Drilling a cylinder, quoting a commercial job, driving to the last call-out. Every job you're doing costs you the next one.
- You're interchangeable to a locked-out caller. No loyalty, no relationship, no reason to try you twice.
Voicemail is worthless in an emergency trade. Nobody standing outside their own front door in the dark leaves a message and waits for a call back.
The calls you miss
Mid-job at a flat, drilling a euro cylinder. A locked-out homeowner is standing on a doorstep two streets away, ringing every locksmith on the first page of Google. The difference between winning that job and losing it is who picks up first. You're on the drill and can't.
On the phone quoting a commercial client. While you're talking, your other line is ringing. A second locked-out caller hangs up after four rings and tries the number below yours. That's a £100–£200 emergency call-out gone.
Driving between jobs. You're hands-free but mid-conversation about a commercial security survey. A homeowner locked out after a late shift rings your number at 11pm. You miss it. They try three others and someone else is there in 20 minutes.
Just finished a job, tools in the van. Your phone is on the seat, you're tidying up, and a call comes in from an unknown number. It rings out. By the time you try to ring back, they've already called someone else.
How Telphi answers for a locksmith
Locksmith calls are time-critical. Telphi's qualifying questions are built to capture job details fast, identify urgency, and get the information to you immediately.
Caller: "Hi, I'm locked out of my house."
Telphi: "I can help with that. Is this a residential property?"
Caller: "Yes, my house."
Telphi: "And are you locked out right now, or are you planning a lock change?"
Caller: "Locked out now, I'm standing outside."
Telphi: "Understood. What area are you in?"
Caller: "Harrogate, off the Leeds Road."
Telphi: "Got it. Is this a standard door lock, or is it a uPVC door with a multipoint lock?"
Caller: "It's uPVC, the handle went."
Telphi: "Thanks – I'll get this over to the team right away. Can I take your name and a mobile number you can be reached on?"
You get an immediate notification: locked out now, uPVC multipoint failure, Harrogate, caller's name and mobile number. You can call back in under a minute.
For vehicle lockouts, Telphi asks for the make, model, and whether the key is visible inside the car. For commercial lock changes, it asks whether access is needed urgently or this is a planned rekeying.
What you get after every call
After each conversation, Telphi sends you:
- A written summary with job type (residential/commercial/vehicle), urgency, location, and lock details
- A full transcript of the call
- A call recording
- An immediate push notification for locked-out calls flagged as urgent
For emergency locked-out calls, Telphi can be configured to transfer the caller directly to your mobile mid-conversation, so you hear it in real time even if you're already with a customer.
Booking
For planned work – lock changes, security surveys, access control installs – Telphi texts the caller a booking link after qualifying the job. They book directly into your calendar. For emergency call-outs, you get an instant notification with the caller's details and you ring back within moments.
