The problem
Decorating is committed work. Once you're cutting in around a window on a scaffold, or you've got paste on a drop and a clock running, stopping isn't a small inconvenience. It costs you the wall.
Three things follow from that:
- The phone rings out during the hours you're earning. The more work you're doing, the less reachable you are.
- It's a comparison purchase. A homeowner rings three decorators, gets three quotes, and starts with whoever answered and sounded organised.
- They ring when you're not working. People decide to decorate in the evening, looking at a hallway they've put off for months, then ring on a Saturday morning.
Calling back on Monday rarely recovers it. The impulse has cooled, or two other decorators have already been round to measure up.
The calls you miss
Rolling a ceiling, both hands occupied. The phone rings. It could be a full house repaint worth £2,000. You can't reach for it in time, and by the time you're down the ladder the number is unfamiliar. Most people won't leave a message.
Outside on a scaffold, cutting in around windows. The noise and the height make taking a call impossible. A customer ringing for an exterior repaint quote rings off after four rings and tries the next decorator on their list.
Finishing a complex wallpaper hang. The paste is on the drop, timing matters. Your phone rings and you let it go to voicemail. The caller hangs up before the beep. Most do.
Bank holiday weekend. A homeowner has been putting off their hallway for weeks. They finally decide to ring on Saturday morning. You're off the tools. Nobody picks up and they forget to ring back Monday.
How Telphi answers for a painter or decorator
Here's a realistic example of how a call plays out.
Caller: "Hi, I'm looking for someone to decorate my living room and hallway."
Telphi: "Of course. Is that painting only, or will you need wallpaper hanging as well?"
Caller: "Both, I think. Feature wall in the living room and the hallway is papered throughout."
Telphi: "Understood. Do you have the paper already, or would you need help sourcing it?"
Caller: "I've got the paper already."
Telphi: "Great. And is the work in a house or a flat, and what area are you in?"
Caller: "House, we're in Chelmsford."
Telphi: "Perfect. I'll pass this over and someone will be in touch to arrange a look around. Can I take your name and a good number to reach you on?"
You get a summary: living room and hallway, feature wall plus full hallway wallpapering, customer supplying paper, Chelmsford. You ring back knowing exactly what the job entails.
For commercial enquiries – offices, new-build handovers, rental property turnarounds – Telphi asks about site access, timeline, and whether a schedule of works exists, so you can price it accurately.
What you get after every call
After each conversation, Telphi sends you:
- A written summary covering the rooms, type of work, location, and any specifics the caller mentioned
- A full transcript so nothing gets missed
- A call recording to revisit if needed
- An urgency flag for calls where the caller has a hard deadline – tenant moving in, landlord inspection, handover date
Nuisance calls and sales cold-callers are filtered before anything reaches you.
If a caller has a genuine issue that needs you on the phone now – a return visit problem, an unhappy customer – Telphi can transfer the call to your mobile before the conversation ends.
Booking
After qualifying the lead, Telphi texts the caller a booking link. They pick a slot for a site visit or call-back directly from your live calendar. No phone tag, no double-booking, no admin on your end.
