How we assessed each product
We assessed each service across seven factors:
- UK availability and infrastructure – does it work on UK numbers without workarounds?
- Pricing transparency – are costs published and predictable?
- AI conversation quality – does it ask qualifying questions or just take a message?
- Trade and local business fit – is it built for or adaptable to service businesses?
- Booking and lead automation – can it move a caller toward an appointment without your involvement?
- App and notification experience – how do you receive and act on calls?
- Free trial – can you test before committing?
Every price and feature below was checked against the provider's own website in August 2026. Where a provider does not publish something, we say so rather than estimate it.
The ranked list
1. Telphi
Best for: UK trade businesses and local service businesses that want AI trained on their sector, not a generic small-business script.
Telphi is built specifically for UK local businesses – plumbers, electricians, builders, roofers, removal firms, mechanics, and similar. The AI is trained on trade terminology, qualification logic relevant to service call types, and UK-specific call patterns. It answers your calls, asks the right questions for your trade, sends you a structured summary, and texts the caller a booking link so they can book directly into your calendar.
Key differentiators from other options on this list:
- Trade-specific intelligence. The AI understands job types, urgency signals, and qualification logic that generic small-business scripts miss. You do not need to write a detailed brief – the baseline knowledge is already there.
- UK-native from the ground up. UK voices, UK phone network integration, UK pricing in pounds with no FX risk.
- Booking automation. After capturing a lead, Telphi texts the caller a booking link so they can book directly into your calendar without you being involved.
- Flat-fee pricing. No per-call or per-minute charges. The cost is the same whether you take 50 calls a month or 500.
- 7-day free trial. No card required.
Honest limitation: Telphi is focused on inbound call handling. If you need outbound calling, complex CRM workflows, or receptionist services for a highly regulated industry, it is not designed for that.
2. Clara
Best for: Hands-on business owners who want a polished, well-reviewed AI receptionist with strong app ratings and multi-country support.
Clara (heyitsclara.com) is one of the most mature AI receptionist apps available to UK businesses. It holds 4.6 stars across every store it appears in: 257 ratings on the UK App Store, around 1,300 on the US App Store, and roughly 3,900 on Google Play. More than 5,000 ratings in total, which is far ahead of anything else in the category. It supports US, UK, and Canada with locale-aware voices and number formats.
Clara's UK pricing is £39.99 a month, or £33.25 a month billed £399 a year. The Pro tier is £69.99 a month, or £58.25 billed £699 a year. A 7-day free trial is available with no card required.
Clara is well-suited to any hands-on business owner who wants reliable 24/7 AI cover without the specialist trade focus. It does not have trade-specific qualification logic out of the box, which means more configuration work for a plumber or electrician compared to Telphi.
Honest limitation: Clara is not trade-specific by default, so setting it up for a plumber or an electrician takes more configuration than it should. Its third tier, at £149.99 a month, was still marked "coming soon" as of August 2026 and cannot currently be bought, so the full booking capability is not yet available at any purchasable price.
3. Jodie (HeyJodie)
Best for: UK small businesses that want straightforward, unlimited-minutes AI answering at a predictable monthly cost, without the setup complexity of a more configurable platform.
Jodie is a UK-focused AI receptionist that starts at £49/month with unlimited minutes, no per-call charges, no setup fees, and a 7-day free trial. It trains on your website and Google Business Profile, which reduces the briefing burden – the AI learns what your business does from publicly available information.
Plans run £49 (Basic), £99 (Professional), £199 (Premium), and Enterprise from £500, all excluding tax. Every tier includes unlimited call minutes. The tiers differ by feature rather than volume: Basic excludes bookings, transfers and team members, and Professional excludes Zapier integrations and priority support. No contract, month-to-month billing.
Jodie competes directly with Telphi in the UK market. Its main relative weakness is that it infers trade knowledge from your public profile rather than carrying baseline sector knowledge – which may require more validation and adjustment for specialist trade call handling.
Honest limitation: The AI's trade knowledge depends on how well your website and Google Business Profile describe your services. A sparse or generic online presence produces a less capable receptionist. Jodie publishes no App Store rating, so there is no public review score to weigh against the others here.
4. Rosie
Best for: US-based service businesses. Limited fit for UK businesses at this stage.
Rosie is an AI phone receptionist for service businesses, positioned for contractors, home services, and similar trades. It offers a 7-day trial. Published pricing is in USD – $49/month (Professional), $149/month (Scale), $299/month (Growth). The Scale tier and above unlock appointment links, transfers, and texting. Bilingual English and Spanish is included on the entry plan.
Rosie prices exclusively in USD and bundles minutes rather than calls: $49 a month for 250 minutes, $149 for 1,000, $299 for 2,000. However, the product is built around a US market context – pricing in USD, support hours aligned to US time zones, and the bilingual Spanish feature is of limited relevance to most UK businesses. For a UK trade business, the lack of native GBP pricing and UK-specific configuration creates unnecessary friction.
Honest limitation: US-centric design and pricing. Not verified as fully functional on UK phone networks with GBP billing. Appointment links only available on the $149/month tier and above.
5. Smith.ai (AI Receptionist plan)
Best for: US-based professional service firms needing AI with human backup. Expensive and US-centric for UK small businesses.
Smith.ai's published plans start at $300 a month for 30 calls, rising to $810 for 90 calls and $2,100 for 300, with overage from $8.50 to $11.50 per call depending on tier. The service combines AI answering with human agent backup, and includes 24/7 availability, enquiry qualification, CRM integration, and spam blocking. There is no free trial, only a 30-day money-back guarantee that excludes overage.
Smith.ai's model is built for professional services – law firms, accountancies, consultancies – where high-value inbound calls justify a higher cost per call. For a UK tradesperson, the per-call pricing model becomes expensive quickly, and the product is not calibrated for UK trade call types.
Honest limitation: US-focused product, priced only in USD. Published plans start at $300 a month for 30 calls, with overage from $8.50 to $11.50 per call. Per-call pricing makes costs unpredictable for businesses with variable call volume. Entry point is significantly higher than UK-native options.
Where Moneypenny still fits
Moneypenny is the UK's best-known human telephone answering service. It is not an AI product – it provides trained human receptionists working in your business name.
Moneypenny suits businesses where calls genuinely require human judgement: law firms, healthcare providers, luxury services, or businesses where the caller relationship is central to the brand. It is considerably more expensive than any AI option on this list.
If your calls are primarily routine inbound enquiries – the bulk of trade and local service business volume – AI will handle them more consistently and at a fraction of the cost. If your calls are high-stakes, complex, or relationship-sensitive by design, Moneypenny is worth considering.

Telphi, Clara, Jodie and Moneypenny are priced in GBP; Rosie and Smith.ai publish in USD only, and these are not converted. VAT treatment varies by provider, so this is not a strict like-for-like. All figures checked against each provider's own site in August 2026.
Which one is right for your business?
You are a tradesperson or run a small local service business in the UK: Telphi is the strongest fit. Trade-specific qualification logic, UK-native infrastructure, and flat-fee pricing remove the main friction points. The 7-day trial lets you verify call quality before committing.
You want the most-reviewed AI receptionist on the UK App Store: Clara has the strongest published rating and review count of any product on this list. The configuration burden is higher for trades, but the product quality is proven.
You want UK-focused AI with simple pricing and quick setup: Jodie starts at £49/month with unlimited minutes and trains itself from your public profile. A reasonable alternative if Telphi is not available when you are reading this.
Your calls require human judgement: Moneypenny. The cost is higher, but the service is genuinely different – trained human receptionists, not software.
Frequently asked questions
Telphi and Jodie are built on UK infrastructure and confirmed as working on UK numbers without any workaround. Clara supports the UK and publishes UK pricing. Rosie lists UK support but prices only in USD, which confirms the US as its primary market. Smith.ai prices only in USD and publishes no UK rate card, so the UK is not a primary market for it.
Prioritise: UK phone number compatibility; trade-specific call handling (not just a generic script); flat or predictable pricing; 24/7 coverage included in the base plan; booking automation; and a free trial long enough to test call quality.
Clara has the strongest published rating of the products here: 4.6 stars from more than 5,000 ratings across the UK App Store, US App Store, and Google Play, checked August 2026. Most other providers publish no comparable review count at all.
Telphi is designed for the range of UK trade and local service businesses – plumbers, electricians, builders, roofers, mechanics, removal firms, and similar. Generic AI receptionists can handle trades, but require more configuration because they start from a blank script rather than sector knowledge.
Yes. Telphi texts the caller a booking link after qualifying them, allowing them to book directly into your connected calendar (Google, Apple, or Outlook) without your involvement. Some other providers offer similar features on higher-tier plans. ---
